The construction of the Berlin Wall was the main symbol of the Cold War , which produced constant crises, wars, nuclear tensions between two antagonistic blocs represented by United States (World capitalist) and Soviet Union (World Communist) .

After World War 2 and the defeat of the Nazis primarily by U.S. and the USSR , Germany was controlled by the victors , but very soon ideological differences between the two superpowers were turned into enemies, under the threat of nuclear war, and created two states the RFA (capitalist West Germany) and the RDA (Communist East Germany).


In one of the moments of tension and as a symbol of separation between capitalism and communism, the Soviet Union lifted on 13 August 1961, a huge border fence over 47 km. which divided Germany into two and the city of Berlin for its streets and homes, separating families and enclosing the entire population of the East after the Iron Curtain .

During the following years, encouraged by the West, many East Germans tried to flee to West Germany , some people got over the wall, but others died in the attempt (as they fired to kill anyone who tried their luck). Many were arrested, their families questioned by the feared Stasi (political police) and imprisoned just for trying.
